Gustav Landauer was born on 7 April 1870 in Karlsruhe, Germany. A leading figure in the German anarchist movement, he was highly critical of centralized state power and passionately advocated for a form of anarchism based on cooperative communities. He was an active member of the Socialist Bund and played a pivotal role in the Munich Soviet (or Bavarian Council Republic), where he was elected Commissioner of Enlightenment and Public Instruction.
Throughout his life, Landauer largely went against the mainstream socialist trend, participating in several revolts and publishing potent works that critiqued both capitalism and constitutional democracy. His thoughts on revolution, nonviolent resistance, community, and the importance of culture made major contributions to both anarchist theory and the broader socialist movement. His writings profoundly influenced anarcho-pacifism and the communitarian anarchist school. Landauer was killed during the suppression of the Bavarian Council Republic in 1919.
