Bhagat Singh was born on 28 September 1907 in a Sikh Jat family in Punjab, in what is now Pakistan. He is best-known as an iconic figure in India's struggle for independence from British rule. By his late teens, he was a member of several revolutionary organizations and became a key leader within the Hindustan Republican Association (HRA). While part of the HRA, he advocated for violent uprising as a means to end British rule, a stance that greatly influenced the wider independence movement.
Singh was hanged by the British government on 23 March 1931. His lifetime was short, but his impact was significant and enduring. His writings and court statements became very popular among Indians and were translated into numerous languages. Singh remains a revolutionary symbol for people worldwide, particularly among Indian youth. His ideas of social justice, equality and freedom, and his sacrifices for these ideals, greatly contributed to shaping the course of the Indian independence movement.
