Born on June 2, 1740, Marquis De Sade was a French philosopher and political activist, notorious for the erotic and violent nature of his works. He was vocal against the conventional morality of his time and defended the amoralism and the absolute freedom of the will, making him a precursor of libertarianism and anti-authoritarianism. His works explored sadomasochism, a term inspired by his name, testing the boundaries of content in literature.
